History of Rex Ranch

Our ranch is a labor of love and passion for setting our course and creating a community business focused on health and education, inclusivity and commitment. The Rex Ranch Resort & Spa is nestled on the edge of the Santa Cruz River Valley called "the palm of God's hand," this site has been a sanctuary for centuries.

The story of the Rex Ranch begins with the gathering of native and migratory peoples who sought shelter from the heat and dryness of the surrounding chaparral in this oasis of clean air and water near the Santa Cruz River. It is also the romantic and practical vision of the family which now shares The Rex Ranch with its history. All who have felt the beauty of this place have a perception of this history and the legacy which is now blossoming as The Rex Ranch.

Metates and pot shards tell us that Hohokam, ancient people, inhabited, farmed and herded here. Mexican history records the exploration and settlement of Spanish colonists and ranchers in this Santa Cruz Valley which proclaims itself a geographic outpost of the tropical south and a trade route for centuries. The wealth of its past continues to bring to those who visit today a sense of sanctuary. A place where visitors breathe deeply as they look at the sunsets, the stars or the approaching tropical rain storms from horseback, from the stone viewing benches or the porches and patios protecting each room.

It is with this breath that The Rex Ranch offers the gift of time and community for each person who ventures across the Santa Cruz to sleep in the adobe lodgings, eat in the Cantina Romantica or rejuvenate in Cielo Health Spa.
